Scholarship auditions held at Foothill

The 28th Annual Henry and Maria Holt Memorial Scholarship Auditions will be held April 19 at Foothill College. A cash award of $2,000 in memory of Henry and Maria Holt will be given to the winner. Additional special awards of $1,000 from the West Bay Opera Guild and $500 in memory of Dr. Jan Popper will also be made.

The competition is open to California singers between the ages of 18 and 26 who are interested in pursuing an operatic career. Participants must return completed application forms by March 27. The program was established in 1970 in memory of Henry Holt, founder of West Bay Opera in Palo Alto and expanded in 1996 to honor Maria Holt, West Bay's longtime general director. More than 800 singers have participated in the auditions.

Almond School holds walkabout

Almond School will hold its annual walkabout from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 7 at the school. Students from kindergarten through sixth grade will be walking to raise funds for school programs.

The event is one of the school's major fundraisers. School members hope to raise $45,000 this year. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Immersion program discussed at forum

The Fourth Annual Two-Way Immersion Parent Forum will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Mariano Castro Elementary School in Mountain View March 7. Keynote speakers will discuss the issues concerning language programs.

Oak walk-a-thon this Saturday

The Oak Elementary School PTA is sponsoring the annual walk-a-thon from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 7 at Oak School. This event is one of the major fundraisers of the school year. Funds raised will support the computer lab, library and playground equipment. Most children from kindergarten through sixth grades will walk. Oak will hold a silent auction in conjunction with the walk-a-thon.

Historial Museum reveals Jewish History

Residents are invited to learn about the influence of the Jewish community in the Los Altos area during the 1800s at 7 p.m. March 28 at the San Jose Historical Museum at Kelley Park. "Havdalah and History" is sponsored by the Congregation Beth David of Saratoga.

The event will feature food, crafts and costumed docents all designed to evoke the period of the mid-1800s.

Kids' open space art honored at reception

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District and the Community School of Music and Arts will hold a reception honoring young artistis participating in the fourth annual, award-winning Kids' Art Of Open Space environmental awarenss project.

The reception si scheduled to be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. March 5 at the Community School of Music and Arts, 253 Martens Avenue in Mountain View.

The children's art will be on display from March 10 through April 3 at five locations within the district's boundaries including the Mountain View Library and the Mountain View City Hall. The goal of this project is to help raise children's awareness of the importance of open space and the preservation of natural habitats.

Mountain View High hosts casino night

The Mountain View High School Music Parents Association is hosting the 14th annual "Casino Night" from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. March 14 at St. Joseph Parish Hall, 1120 MIramonte Ave. in Mountain View.

The night will include hors d' oeuvres, games, raffles, a silent auction and musical entertainment.

All proceeds benefit the instrumental groups at Mountain View High and are used to purchase and repair instruments and equipment and to defray travel costs. Tickets are $15. For more information, call 964-1086.

Menlo School hosts State Classical League

This Friday and Saturday, approximately 1,400 Latin students from around the state will converge at Menlo School to test catapults, raace chariots and parade in their togas at the 43rd annual California Junior Classical League State Convention. The league is the nation's largest academic youth organization and an affiliate of the American Classical League.

The convention will include a wide spectrum of activities and competitions. Students take test in classical mythology, languages and hisotry. They compete in dramatic interpretation, sight reading and Latin and English oratory. The convention will also include swimming, tennis, track and field, volleyball and basketball.
