And when the final buzzer sounded last Saturday night, turnovers again tormented the Owls. Visiting College of the Redwoods was beneficiary of the Lady Owls' generosity, staving off a pair of late rallies by Foothill to grab a 72-68 win in the opening round of the north regional playoffs. The Owls turned the ball over 26 times, including three in succession after taking a 40-39 lead midway through the second half. It was only the third time Foothill led after scoring the game's first points on a jumper by Nia Brown. Foothill (14-15) grabbed the one-point lead on a five-foot jumper by Krista Knapp. Then came the turnovers and College of the Redwoods streaked to an 11-point advantage thanks to the inside scoring of Krystyna Hofstra. Again, the Owls charged back with Knapp doing most of the damage. Two free throws and a pair of turn-around jumpers by Knapp and a basket by Heather Green closed the gap to 55-52. But the visitors from Eureka withstood the barrage. Knapp finished with a game-high 26 points, pulled eight rebounds and had two steals. Green grabbed 11 boards. Owls shine in track Grady Wilburn, who starred on the Foothill men's basketball team, changed uniforms and won the high jump at the Coast Conference track and field relays at West Valley College last week. He cleared the bar at 6-2 and later triple jumped 42-7 to place fourth. Shawm Alvarez won the javelin with a throw of 159-8, while William Nero was second in the long jump by going 21-7. On the women's side, Natalie Johnson won the javelin with a toss of 96-11. Tennis team stuns Davis Last Saturday the Foothill men's tennis team (5-1) knocked off U.C. Davis, rated the country's 14th best team in Division II. The Owls won 6-3 behind No. 1 singles player Dan Castro, who posted a 6-2, 6-3 win. The day before, Foothill routed rival De Anza 9-0. |
