The award recognized a distinctive approach in handling a comparatively small front yard. The Los Altos Supply and Garden Center was selected for the commercial award of the month based on an attractive display variety of products for garden service. Los Altos Boy Scout Troop 30 celebrated the "birth month" of scouting by holding an Eagle Scout Court of Honor at Christ Episcopal Church, sponsor of the troop. Mayor Lee Toole proclaimed a special "Eagle Scout Recognition Day in Los Altos" in honor of the two new Eagle Scouts, Alex Bergtraun and Phil Roemer. Both of the boys had earned Scouting's highest award partly through many hours of volunteer work at the library by Bergtraun and a neighborhood home fire safety program developed by Roemer. Both were honor roll students and active in special programs offered by their schools. Two pages of pictures of trees in glorious bloom in early March 1973 carried a headline reading, "Nourished by record rains, blossoming trees brighten the peninsula and grace the landscape." 50 years ago in the Los Altos News As reported in the March 11, 1948, issue of the Los Altos News, motorists, who had wondered when the long-promised installation of a traffic signal light at San Antonio Road and El Camino Real would take place, were assured work would be done in the near future. Plans and specifications for the light had been prepared by the state, and bids were anticipated during the following few weeks. It was through Los Altan Fred Cameron's efforts that the original petition for installation of the light at the dangerous intersection was circulated in the fall of 1946. State funds for the project, however, did not become available until mid 1947. More than 100 boys and girls trooped into the Los Altos Scout Hall on March 6, 1948, to attend the first in a series of Saturday movie programs arranged by the local Kiwanis and Boy Scouts who hoped to aid in providing wholesome entertainment for young people of the community. Cost of admission was 15 cents. The initial two-hour show featured the film, "Submarine Menace," two cartoons and the first episode in the serial, "The Lost Frontier." On the following Saturday, the featured film was "Stagecoach," starring John Wayne and Claire Trevor. - Ellen Shaw of the Los Altos History House Association |
