The classes are part of the statewide efforts by the Red Cross and Pacific Gas & Electric Co. to train 10,000 people per year in CPR throughout California. Summer camp for kids at Redwood Grove The City of Los Altos Recreation Department is accepting applications for its 1998 Summer Day Camp Programs at Redwood Grove Nature Preserve. Program and registration information are included in the spring 1998 schedule of classes, which was mailed March 2. Application deadline is 5 p.m. March 23. Hidden Villa preserve hike A hike, led by Joe Jordan of NASA, will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., March 21, at Hidden Villa Wilderness Preserve in Los Altos Hills. Hikers will explore such physical phenomena as waves and rainbows, whirlpools and shadows, bubbles and crystals, and echoes and mirages, as well as discover connections between everyday experience and the earliest moments of creation. Jordan will discuss some solutions to global environmental problems during the hike. The hike is open to ages 10 and up. The cost is $6 for children, $8 for adults. American Rhododendron Society The next meeting of the DeAnza Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society will be held at 7:30 p.m., March 18, at 1991 Deodora Drive, Los Altos. Barry Coates, arborist for the City of Saratoga, will present a program of different trees used in the landscape for either accent or shade, particularly trees that are compatible with a rhododendron garden. Hospice volunteers need MidPeninsula Hospice Services, a not-for-profit-entity, is offering a new volunteer training beginning on April 21 in Mountain View. Experience the joy of becoming one of the caring men and women who, like good friends, respond to the needs of terminally ill patients and their families by providing caregiver relief, errands, transportation, and companionship. Volunteers receive an 18-hour training, regular support meetings, and an opportunity to work with other Hospice team members. Days and hours for volunteering are flexible. Los Altos Republican Women Los Altos Republican Women will be having a luncheon meeting at 11 a.m., March 18, at Mac's American Grill, 325 Main St. The featured speaker will be Ruben Barrales, San Mateo County supervisor. Barrales, who is currently running for state controller, has been named "one of the 100 most influential Hispanics in the United States of America" by "Hispanic Business Magazine." Funeral and memorial society The annual meeting of the Funeral and Memorial Planning Society will be held from 3-5 p.m. this Sunday at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 505 E. Charleston Road, Palo Alto. The meeting, which is free and open to the public, will include topics such as funeral customs and traditions, as well as corporate vs. privately-owned funeral homes and hospice services. The society is a nonprofit organization devoted to educating the public and helping individuals plan memorials and low-cost funerals. Funded exclusively by membership dues and donations, they publish a biannual newsletter listing society-approved mortuaries, services, and fees. For more information, call 321-2109. 'Denim to Diamonds' gala This year's Denim to Diamonds, a gala evening benefiting Ronald McDonald House at Stanford, will begin at 6:30 p.m. this Saturday at the Hiller Aviation Museum at the San Carlos Airport. The event, with 700 party-goers attending in their best black tie and glitzy western-wear, will begin with a champagne reception followed by a silent auction. Patrons will then be treated to a lavish sit-down dinner in an atmosphere decorated in an aviation motif. The evening will include music, dancing, casino games, and gold mine claims. This year, the event is targeted to raise more than $200,000 for the Ronald McDonald House. Guests are invited to peruse the selection of silent auction items and stake their claim on gifts totaling in excess of $100,000. Items include a collection of original signed lithographs and serigraphs by Warhol, Erte, Dali, and other notable 20th century artists; European excursions; holiday packages; ski and resort trips; restaurant and hotel packages; and tickets to special area events. Co-chairwomen are all from the Los Altos area: Shelley Doran, Karin Klarreich and Peggi Hunt. The event is underwritten by semiconductor equipment manufacturer Ultratech Stepper, Inc., with other Bay Area corporate sponsors such as NEC, International Network Services, Integrated Archive Systems, Adaptec, Manpower, and Premisys helping to deliver a full night of fun and entertainment. The Garden Club of Los Altos The next meeting of the Garden Club of Los Altos will be held at 1:30 p.m., March 25, at the Creekside Room of the United Methodist Church, 655 Magdalena Ave. The guest speaker will be Kren Rasmussen of Bloomster's Inc, San Jose. Hidden Villa T-shirt contest Children and adults are invited to enter designs for Hidden Villa's 1998 camp and general T-shirts. Designs must incorporate any or all of the values of the Los Altos Hills-based environmental education center: environmental, multicultural and farm scenes. A panel of judges will choose two winning designs which will appear on T-shirts this summer. Prize money is being donated by Hidden Villa trustee Scott Chang. All entries must be received at Hidden Villa's administrative offices by 5 p.m., March 27. Entry fees per design are $3 for children ages 5-13, and $6 for youth and adults ages 14 and up. To receive an entry form and contest rules, call 949-8650. Call for more MROSD docents The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District is inviting residents to try their hand as district docents. Docents have the opportunity to share knowledge while leading hikes in the open space preserves. The district's 10-week spring docent training program began 7 p.m., last Tuesday, and is held every Tuesday and Saturday through May 19. Most Tuesday night training sessions will be from 7-9 p.m. at the district office in Los Altos. Saturday field sessions will be at a different preserve each week from about 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, extending from San Carlos to Los Gatos, is a public agency which has preserved more than 42,000 acres of diverse open space and manages 23 open space preserves. Cardiac support group at El Camino The "Heart-to-Heart" cardiac support group is offered free of charge to the community at El Camino Hospital Park Pavilion meeting room K the first and third Wednesday of each month from 4:30-6 p.m. The group is on-going and open to anyone with heart disease.
