Dr. Frances Conley, who resigned from the Stanford Medical School over sex discrimination, will address the topic at Saturday's meeting of the American Association of University Women.

Dr. Frances Conley, the former Stanford Medical School professor who resigned over "gender insensitivity" from her male colleagues, will be the guest speaker at the next local American Association of University Women meeting, 11:30 a.m., this Saturday, at the Mandarin Classic Restaurant, First and Main streets, Los Altos.

Conley will offer an update on the "chilling climate" women still face today in hospitals and medical schools.

Conley's resignation seven years ago made national headlines, but despite sexual harassment charges against male doctors in the years since, recent studies show continued discrimination against women.

"I can't be optimistic," Conley said. "The problems will be here for a while."

Conley has written a book, "Walking Out on the Boys," which exposes the "small elite white male world of neurosurgery."

She said, "It's time for women to learn not just to have a voice but to use it." The book is set for an April publication.

She serves currently as acting chief of the Palo Alto Veterans Affairs Health Care System and chairs the Stanford faculty senate.

The association meeting also will include the Los Altos-Mountain View branch's Award for the Status of Women, and election of next year's officers.

Reservations are $12 per person. For tickets, call Jeanne Hutchins at 493-5584, or mail a check to 4127 Wilmar Drive, Palo Alto 94306.
