Town Crier Staff Report

The Community School of Music & Arts presents a benefit, "Celebrate Spring with Music and Art," 6:30 p.m., March 20, at the Ozone Cafe at Silicon Graphics, Building 40, 1600 Charleston Road, Mountain View.

All proceeds will benefit student scholarships and financial aid for the school's arts education programs.

The evening includes musical performances by the students and faculty, a children's art exhibit, wine and hors d'oeuvres, dinner and dessert, a silent auction, and a benefit drawing. Serving as master of ceremonies for the event is Jean Hollands, local motivational speaker, writer, and chief executive officer of Growth & Leadership Center, Inc., of Mountain View.

Performing at the event are a number of the school's music faculty and students. Merit scholarship students appearing at the event include jazz pianist Taylor Eigsti and classical pianist Sam Li.

The Peninsula Children's Chorale will perform under the direction of Kaye DeVries. Adult voice student Yolanda Rhodes and special guest jazz pianist Dee Spencer will round out the evening's music program.

Event co-chairpersons are Pat Johnson of Los Altos and Elayne Dauber of Los Altos Hills.

"Attendees at the event can expect to hear truly outstanding musical performances by talented students and faculty. Everyone associated with this year's benefit is thrilled that Silicon Graphics has graciously provided us with the use of its dramatic new facility for the event," Johnson said. "We expect this year's benefit to host our largest gathering ever, including 10 corporate and individual table sponsors."

"We are grateful for the support of all of our sponsors, especially the ongoing commitment of the Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich, and Rosati Foundation which, for the fifth year in a row, has provided partial underwriting for the event," Dauber said.

Benefit committee members include: Margaret Abe, Ethel Blank, Penny Brunello, Marge Bruno, Audrey Erbes, Sue Larson, and Ginger Summit, all of Los Altos/Los Altos Hills; R. Michael Kasperzak, Jr., Sallie Kladnik, Anita Nichols, and Art Takahara, all of Mountain View; and Lara Hoyem of Menlo Park.

The Community School of Music & Arts, a nonprofit organization founded in 1968, is one of the largest providers of arts education in Santa Clara County, serving more than 16,000 children and adults yearly.

The school's Financial Aid Program will award more than $110,000 this year through merit scholarships, tuition assistance, work-study positions and other means.

All proceeds from "Celebrate Spring with Music and Art" will benefit music and art scholarships and financial aid for arts education programs.

Tickets for the event are $75 per person and are tax-deductible as allowed by law. Benefit drawing tickets are $10 each (three tickets per $25). Attendance at the event is not necessary to enter the drawing. Event and benefit drawing tickets are available at the Community School of Music & Arts, 253 Martens Ave. (off Grant Road), Mountain View.
