Children's singer performs at Gunn

Tom Chapin, a Grammy nominated children's folk singer, is scheduled to perform 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday at Spangenberg Auditorium at Gunn High School in Palo Alto.

Chapin, brother of the late singer Harry Chapin, has performed 26 years and has released six recordings. The latest, "Around the World and Back Again," was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Performances benefit Music For Minors, a nonprofit group that trains docents who teach classroom music to elementary school children.

Euraupair program seeks host families

Local families with children ages 3 months to 12 years interested in hosting an au pair exchange participant from Europe, Japan, South Africa or French-speaking Canada are being sought by the non-profit Euraupair Intercultural Child Care Program.

EurAupair au pairs are young adults between the ages of 18 and 26, who have chosen to take a year off between school terms to live with an American family and help care for the family's children in exchange for the opportunity to learn more about American culture.

Wildlife Rescue classes for volunteers

Residents interested in caring for injured wildlife can enroll in Wildlife Rescue's year-round training classes.

Mid-March through early October is the busiest time of the year for Wildlife Rescue. This is nesting season and many baby birds and squirrels fall from nests due to people pruning their trees.

Wildlife Rescue cared for 2410 injured and orphaned wild animals, including many from the Los Altos area last year. Approximately 58 percent of the animals treated were returned into the wild.

Hidden Villa preserve hike

A hike, led by Joe Jordan of NASA, will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, at Hidden Villa Wilderness Preserve in Los Altos Hills.

Hikers will explore such physical phenomena as waves and rainbows, whirlpools and shadows, bubbles and crystals, and echoes and mirages, as well as discover connections between everyday experience and the earliest moments of creation. Jordan will discuss some solutions to global environmental problems during the hike.

The hike is open to ages 10 and up. The cost is $6 for children $8 for adults. Hikers are requested to bring a no-garbage lunch. To register, call 949-8653.

American Rhododendron Society

The next meeting of the DeAnza Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society will be held at 7:30 tonight, at 1991 Deodora Drive, Los Altos.

Barry Coates, arborist for the City of Saratoga, will present a program of different trees used in the landscape for either accent or shade.

The Garden Club

of Los Altos

The next meeting of the Garden Club of Los Altos will be held at 1:30 p.m., March 25, at the Creekside Room of the United Methodist Church, 655 Magdalena Ave.

The guest speaker will be Kren Rasmussen of Bloomster's Inc, San Jose. Rasmussen will demonstrate his floral design skills.
