Easter egg hunt ready to roll

The Easter Bunny will make his (or her) annual appearance on Main and State streets in downtown Los Altos 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, with an egg hunt for young children, bunny-ear hat making, face painting and jelly bean-guessing contest.

Sponsored by the Los Altos Village Association, the puppet show and all Easter events are free and open to the public. For more information, call 949-5282.

News writer at book signing

Veteran San Jose Mercury News writer Harry Farrell will introduce, discuss and sign his new non-fiction book "Shallow Grave in Trinity County" at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, at Heintzelman's Bookstore, 205 State St., Los Altos.

"Shallow Grave" is a chronological, compassionate and gripping story of a hideous 1955 crime involving 14-year-old Stephanie Bryan, who was kidnapped and killed.

Farrell worked 40 years as a journalist for the San Jose Mercury News. His first book, "Swift Justice: Murder and Vengeance in a California Town," won the Edgar Allen Poe award in 1992 for the best true-crime book of the year.

'Love & Survival' author Dean Ornish to speak

Dean Ornish, author of "Love & Survival: The Scientific Basis for the Healing Power of Intimacy," will speak at 7:30 p.m. this Friday at Spangenberg Auditorium, Gunn High School, in Palo Alto.

Ornish is known for his earlier book, "Eat More, Weigh Less," in which he writes about how the progression of coronary heart disease can be reversed with diet and lifestyle changes.

Nominations for annual service award

Nominations are being accepted for the 35th annual Community Service Award, co-sponsored this year by the Los Altos District of the Peninsula West Valley Association of Realtors and the Los Altos Town Crier.

To be eligible, candidates shall have contributed in a meaningful way to the quality, spirit and character of Los Altos and/or Los Altos Hills.
