Local school children will have a chance to practice natural disaster safety techniques Saturday, through a program coordinated by Los Altos resident Emily Jen.

The Los Altos High School senior is among the 20 local students to help the Palo Alto Area Chapter of the American Red Cross plan the first annual safety preparedness day, "Youth Power."

Through hands-on activities, relay races and skits, Jen said she hopes to get kids to "think safe.

"I hope that through all my preparation for this event, that at least one child will be able to save a life."

The safety day will include information on fire safety, earthquake and flood preparedness and will feature first aid techniques for third through fifth graders.

"Youth Power" will take place 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 4111 Alma St., Palo Alto. The event is open to third, fourth and fifth grade students only.
