Lauren Smith-Hams - Pinewood basketball

ith an array of capable scorers on the roster, Lauren Smith-Hams didn't have to put up a lot of points for the Pinewood School girls basketball team to be successful. The junior point guard's main responsibilities were running the offense, setting up teammates for shots and playing tight defense.

However, this doesn't mean she can't light up the scoreboard. "She's a great team player who does whatever's asked of her," coach Doc Scheppler said. "If we need her to score, she does."

Smith-Hams proved that in the CCS Division V title game March 6. She led Pinewood to a 56-28 win over Sacred Heart Prep by scoring 23 points.

In the NorCal quarterfinals March 12, she had 24 points and nine assists in a rout of Denair.

Darren Marble - Los Altos track

Darren Marble is a coach's dream, according to Los Altos High assistant Fred Graber.

"He's a joy to coach," Graber said. "He's very smart, he listens and he's a leader. He does it all."

These characteristics have helped Marble become the top high jumper in Los Altos High history and one of the best in the state. The senior has won all six meets he's competed in this season, including the Stanford Invitational last Saturday.

Marble broke a 10-year-old record at the prestigious K-Bell Invitational March 14 in Los Gatos by clearing 6-8 1/4.

Graber believes Marble is capable of beating the school record of 6-10 he set a year ago.

"Don't be surprised if he gets 7-feet this season," Graber said. "He's a fabulous jumper."
