The Los Altos Library will celebrate national poetry month with a special poetry event for school-age children at 3 p.m. on April 15. Gary Turchin, an author, storyteller and performer, will present, "The Roots of My Poet Tree."

To celebrate National Library week, 3M is sponsoring the second annual Check-it-out Yourself Day at the library from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on April 20. All patrons need to do is come to the library and check out books or magazines at the library's 3M SelfCheck System.

If at least 100 people use the self-service check-out machine, the library will qualify for a cash prize. Last year the library won $1,000 in the contest.
