Eighth grader Sara Leisgang won first prize at the St. Simon Science Fair Feb. 17-19 for her "Chick Eggstravaganza," a study of different methods of incubating eggs. Andrea Dulick won second place for her "Forrest Guppy" experiment. Sam Bliss and Robert deLuca tied for third place. Seventh grade winners included Edward Hoa, McKenzie Plank, Karen Liberty and Sarah Shen. Sixth grade winners were Brian Liu, Julia Tomlin, Justine Fonte and Jack Welsh. Special awards were given to first graders K.C. Hart and Nicholas Hart; second graders, Jessica Kernan and Benjamin Sigrist; third graders, Alsia Healy and David Rivera; fourth graders, Michael Bachand and Alex Indaco; and fifth grader Andrew Coggiola.

Michael Austin, son of Dennis R. and Janet A. Austin of Los Altos, recently performed in the Whitman College production "Holy Smokes," as the main character and as the narrator. He also performed in "Man of Mode" last December.

Los Altos resident Kimberly L. Edwards was named to the dean's list at Boston University for the fall semester.

Jennifer Mary James of Los Altos was among the 875 students to graduate from Purdue University last fall. She received a master's in education.

David Dostal, son of Charles Dostal and Ann Halstead of Los Altos, earned a bachelor's degree cum laude in physics from Lawrence University last January.

Jenny Marchick of Los Altos Hills was named to the dean's list at Connecticut College for the fall semester.

Arthur Jesse Stamness of Los Altos Hills and Bradley Charles Davis, Emily Jane Jensen, Adam Stanley Maino, Jennifer Lynn Rayden and Jeffrey Haviland Oldberg of Los Altos, were among the approximately 5,000 students to graduate from the University of Santa Barbara last fall.

Nicholas Osborn, son of Linda and Stephen Osborn of Los Altos, was named to the Claremont McKenna College dean's list for the fall semester. A junior and an economics-accounting major, Osborn is a graduate of Woodside Priory School.

Edward Hsu of Los Altos Hills and Alexander Pearson of Mountain View were among the six Menlo School seniors to be named National Merit Scholarship finalists. Only about 14,000 students nationwide qualified as finalists. Recognition as a finalist is considered one of the most prestigious forms of academic distinction for high school students.

Shantonu Sen, Matthew Chun, Ryan McCarthy and Alan Keefer were named Bank of America plaque winners by the Mountain View High School Scholarships Committee. Jamie Mikkelsen, Keetje Kuipers, Robert Baird, Nicole Moison, Stanley Park, Philip Katz, Lisa Earl, Polly Pale, Roldolfo Siaotong, Amy Pace, Jodie Antypas, Megan Moran, Angela Gee and David Palma received certificates of achievement.

Cynthia Lynn Davidson of Los Altos Hills was named to the dean's list at Lehigh University for the 1997 fall semester.

Julie Therese Howry and Mick Daniel O'Keefe of Los Altos and N. Monique Dail of Mountain View were among the 1,300 students at the University of Oregon to have been named to the dean's list for the 1997-'98 school year.

Catherine Barnes, daughter of John and Carolyn Barnes of Los Altos, is studying in Madrid, Spain this spring through the foreign study program at Whitman College.
