Special to the Town Crier

As a culminating activity for their study of local history, Los Altos third graders are participating in the sixth annual historical tour of their hometown.

Beginning today through May 15, students will complement classroom work with a three-part journey into the past.

They will explore the downtown on a "walkabout," during which they will identify the first buildings and businesses in Los Altos, learn about the role of Southern Pacific Railroad in the city's development, and hear stories of early pioneers.

Then they will visit Hillview Community Center to view an exhibit of paintings. The third activity will be a tour through the Los Altos History House Museum. There, third graders will learn of the life of an orchardist family of the Depression years.

This program is sponsored by the Los Altos Historical Commission and the Los Altos School District.
