This year's Los Altos rainfall surpasses '85-86 record, totals show

With 43.63 inches of rain recorded this year as of April 1, Los Altos has already had about 4.04 inches more rainfall this season than in the last record rainy season in 1985-'86, when Los Altos resident Arthur Prieur recorded 39.59 inches of rain.

Prieur has been recording the town's rainfall with a rain gauge from his Los Altos home for the past 15 years. According to his records, the town surpassed 30 inches of rain only twice in the past 15 years - once in the 1985-'86 season and again in the 1994-'95 season. The other seasons came no where near this season's amount, he said.

Here are the past 15 season rainfall totals recorded by Arthur Prieur:

1983-'84: 22.5"

1984-'85: 21.81"

1985-'86: 39.59"

1986-'87: 13.82"

1987-'88: 14.23"

1988-'89: 19.11"

1989-'90: 15.52"

1990-'91: 15.52"

1991-'92: 20.48"

1992-'93: 21.11"

1993-'94: 16.31"

1994-'95: 33.28"

1995-'96: 23.34"

1996-'97: 23.45"

1997-'98: 43.63"*
