In conjunction with April being deemed Volunteer Month, the Los Altos-based Year of the Good Neighbor committee inspired 40 students at Blach Intermediate School in Los Altos to create their own Web site to promoting volunteer opportunities for kids and adults in the community.

"I think it's going to give people local information that is sometimes hard to find," said Blach instructor Trish Langdon, who worked with the students. "For the kids (the benefit is) finding out that people are doing so many interesting things."

To generate interest in volunteering, Blach students are running a contest for the elementary school classes. To win the contest, a class must choose an environmentally helpful activity that they will implement if they win.

Only grades K-6 in Los Altos, Mountain View or Palo Alto may enter. Visit the Web site and use the entry form there. The address is: www.blach.losaltos.k12.ca.us/cclub/volunteer_contest/welcome.html.
