Panofsky will speak on the history of the center. A high energy physicist, Panofsky became the center's director in 1961. He studied at both Princeton University in Princeton, N.J., and California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. During World War II, he worked as a consultant at Los Alamos Laboratory in New Mexico. Panofsky went on to the University of California, Berkeley as a researcher and then as an associate professor. He joined Stanford University's faculty in 1951. An advisor to several of U.S. presidents, Panofsky has chaired the Committee on International Security and Arms Control of the National Academy of Sciences. He has authored numerous articles on particle physics and on arms control and disarmament. The historical society has four programs annually on a wide range of subjects.
