Like most fifth graders, turning on the television is part of Brent Doiguchi's daily routine. The Oak School student said he usually watches about two hours of television each day. So when his teacher suggested that he and his classmates pull the plug on their televisions for one week as part of the fourth annual National TV-Turnoff Week April 22-28, he said he was "shocked" and unsure if he could do it.

The game, to be played at Los Altos High, honors the memory of Baird, a longtime coach at Los Altos. After the game, the Bob Baird Scholarship Award will be presented to a senior on the varsity team. Varian reports increased sales and earnings for second quarter

Net earnings for the second quarter climbed to $23 million from $17.3 million in 1997. Diluted earnings per share of 75 cents were up 36 percent from 1997's 55 cents. For the first half, Varian's net earnings of $42.7 million represented a 42 percent rise above the prior year's $30.2 million, whle diluted earnings per share of $1.39 were up 46 percent from 1997's 95 cents.
