25 years ago in the Town Crier

According to the May 16, 1973, edition of the Town Crier, in an effort to spur the teaching of environmental appreciation in area elementary schools, several conservation-minded members of the local branch of the American Association of University Women wrote a 155-page teaching handbook, "Child Ecology: A Resource for the Elementary School Teacher."

Approximately 100 copies of the book were distributed to teachers. The remaining 100 copies were sold. Requests for the manual began coming from many places, some outside California, which the AAUW group was unable to meet. Interest was also expressed by the California State Department of Education, Santa Clara County, other AAUW branches and neighboring cities.

Ideas from the teachers in the school districts using the book were incorporated into a revision of the handbook undertaken by the AAUW.

A gloomy financial picture for the years 1973-74 through 1977-78 was outlined for the Los Altos School District Board of Trustees at its May meeting. The report predicted expenditures would exceed income during the five-year period by an estimated $1,224,233.

Business Manager Keith Vander Zyl cautioned the board to set priorities in programs, looking at the efficiency of operation and examining all aspects of the total educational program

50 years ago in the Los Altos News

The May 13, 1948, edition of the Los Altos News reported that Los Altos went on the air in May 1948. A radio program on station KSJO, 1590 on the radio dial, was scheduled for Thursday mornings emanating from the local Foodliner Store. It was broadcast directly from the store and included interviews with local residents, business people and children, along with a summary of last minute Los Altos area news items and the latest United Press world news.

For the second time in two weeks, a dog shooting was reported in the Los Altos area. A black male Labrador hunting dog, belonging to W. A. Bechtel, was shot by a large caliber rifle fired by an unknown person. The previous week, a similar shooting occurred of a pointer belonging to Joe Zingarelli. Both dogs were shot through the shoulder. They were expected to recover, but would be crippled.

It was a close race in the parents-children spelling bee held on the school lawn on Wednesday morning, May 5, 1948. "Mother" Betty Oleson barely nosed out seventh grader George Nakamura, who placed second.
