The market will be held on Sundays this season, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Bank of America parking lot, 901 Fremont Ave., Los Altos. The Allied Arts Guild Restaurant will be the guest producer on opening day. The restaurant features marinades, salad dressings and condiments. Tibetan plants subject of meeting The DeAnza chapter of the American Rhododendron Society will meet at 7:30 p.m., May 20, at 1991 Deodora Drive, Los Altos. Guest speaker Dr. Keith White will talk about his 1997 plant-collecting trip to Tibet. While in Tibet, White tracked down and collected the roots of rhododendron species, which are the forerunners of all of today's spectacular blooms. A plant raffle will be held. Poet to lecture in POST series Robert Hass, former United States poet laureate, will speak at 8 tonight at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, 500 Castro St. The lecture is the third of a three-part Wallace Stegner lecture series benefiting Peninsula Open Space Trust, a nonprofit organization preserving land in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Hass will integrate poetry readings and commentary into his lecture about the human relationship with the natural world. The series honors the late author and environmentalist Wallace Stegner, an award-winning author and supporter of local environmental groups. Hass, a professor of English at the University of California, Berkeley, served as poet laureate from 1995 to 1997. Jaspar Ridge 'Discovery Day' A "Discovery Day" tour of the Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve is scheduled for 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday with entrance to the preserve until 2:30 p.m. only. Organizers said this is an opportunity to learn about animals, insects and plants living at the preserve, a 1,200-acre natural area located on Stanford University land. Admission is free. Engineer holds book signing Los Altos resident John MacDougall will have a book signing for his new work, "A View from the Valley," 2-4 p.m., Saturday, at Heintzelman's Bookstore, 205 State St., in Los Altos. MacDougall's book chronicles his experiences as a Silicon Valley engineer. |
