NET GAINS The Mountain View High boys tennis team earned a CCS berth by beating co-SCVAL El Camino Division champion Fremont 4-3 in a league playoff last Friday at Cupertino High. A day earlier, Spartan seniors Matt Brunnings and Mike Zalisk won the doubles title at the league's individual championships with a 6-0, 6-2 win over teammates Pavan Reddy and Paul Romeo.

PAST VS. PRESENT: The Los Altos High Alumni baseball team will take on the school's varsity squad at 1 p.m., Saturday in the annual Bob Baird Memorial Alumni Game. The game, to be played at Los Altos High, honors the memory of Baird, a longtime coach at Los Altos. After the game, the Bob Baird Scholarship Award will be presented to a senior on the varsity team. Following the presentation, a dinner party catered by Chef Chu's will be held for the alumni at the Los Altos Youth Center. To attend the dinner, call Bill Dolby at 941-9335.

BOOK OF GIANTS: Sportscaster Steve Bitker will be signing his new book, "The Original San Francisco Giants: The Giants of '58," from 1-2 p.m., Saturday at the Giants Dugout store in Palo Alto's Stanford Shopping Center. For more information, call 468-3700.

TRYOUTS AFOOT: AYSO Region 43 is now registering soccer players for the fall season.
