Town Crier Staff Report

A longtime nemesis prevented Foothill College from successfully defending its California Community College team tennis championship last Thursday at Claremont College.

College of the Desert - a team that's been as dominant in the south as Foothill has in the north - ended the Owls' one-year reign at the top with a convincing 5-1 victory. This marked Foothill's first loss of the season against community college competition, leaving the Owls with a 17-3 record.

Sophomore John Hui, in the midst of signing on with UCLA, was the only Foothill player to break through against College of the Desert. Hui, playing at No. 2, beat Maciek Jozwiak 6-2, 6-4.

The Owls No. 1 player, Dan Castro, wasn't as fortunate as Hui. After losing the first set 6-3 to Martin Thaler, Castro rallied to win the second set 6-4. Thaler then edged Castro 7-5 to win the match.

Foothill's other close lose came at No. 6 singles, where Ben Cabell took Golan Sasson to three sets before falling 6-0, 6-7, 7-5.

The Owls had better luck in last weekend's individual tournament. Castro and Hui became the first doubles team to win back-to-back titles in 35 years.

The duo lost the first set of the championship match 6-2 to College of the Desert's Juan Cerda and Gabriel Pitta. Castro and Hui then came back to win the next two sets 6-2, 7-6.
