"We were the only school in Los Altos selected, so we're really excited," said Egan Principal Brenda Dyckman. Helene Sahadi York, spokeswoman for Citibank, said organizers chose Egan as one of the program's 43 recipients after local Citibank employees nominated the school for its "outstanding technology plan." "We looked at the technology plans of each nominee and tried to provide computers to a wide range of different types of schools," York said. Dyckman said six computers will be used in the school's resource room and four will be used in the English as a Second Oral Language department. She said previous to the donation, the approximately 20-30 students in each program had to share two computers. Now there's a computer for every child in some classes, she said. "These resources will give teachers the opportunity to help children have more individualized, personalized instruction, and empower them to get their work done," Dyckman said. Through the program, Citibank has awarded more than 160 surplus computers to nonprofit organizations and schools throughout California and Nevada as part of its $25 million commitment toward creating "smarter schools." |
