Los Altos resident Nick Wood won the bronze medal at the All-State Fencing Championships April 25 at George Washington High in San Francisco.

The Los Altos High sophomore is among the top-ranked fencers in the Central California Division's under-20 class.

Along with winning the individual medal, Wood also was part of the Palo Alto Jewish Community Center team that earned second-place. He teamed with fellow Los Altos resident Matt Sorenson, a junior at Menlo School, and Gunn High sophomore Peter Erickson. The trio was narrowly defeated in the final by an Orange County team.

Erica Trunzo, a junior at Gunn, won the gold medal in individual women's foil. She defeated Kiki Vega of Sacramento in the championship match. Two Castilleja School students placed in the top 10 on the women's side. Caddie Heddelson took third and Raelyn Jacobson finished seventh.

The three fencers also combined forces to capture the team championship. Representing Palo Alto, they came away with individual gold medals and a team trophy.

Both local teams were coached by Connie Yu of Los Altos Hills, who teaches youth fencing at the Albert L. Schultz Jewish Community Center in Palo Alto.
