This is the time of year most high school softball teams pack away their uniforms and hope for better things next season.

But the championship dreams of four local squads are still alive. St. Francis, Mountain View, Los Altos and Pinewood have extended their seasons by qualifying for the Central Coast Section playoffs.

St. Francis, Mountain View and Los Altos - all part of the SCVAL De Anza Division - are playing in Division II of the playoffs, while Private Schools Athletic League member Pinewood is in Division III.

League champion St. Francis (26-4) is the top seed in Division II and earned a bye in the first round. This gives the Lancers a free pass to Saturday's 4 p.m. quarterfinal game at PAL Stadium in San Jose. They will play the winner of tomorrow's game between No. 8 Aragon and No. 9 Notre Dame-Belmont.

Mountain View, which secured the De Anza's third and final automatic playoff berth, is seeded sixth. The Spartans (16-11) take on No. 11 Westmont at 3 p.m. tomorrow at PAL.

Mountain View coach Ray Malley likes his chances against the youthful Warriors.

"We're very confident," the first-year coach said. "We feel we're the better team."

If the Spartans prove that, they will play No. 3 North Monterey County at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sherwood in Salinas.

Los Altos, which earned an at-large bid to the playoffs, is seeded 10th. The Eagles (14-14) face No. 7 Del Mar at 7 p.m. tomorrow at PAL.

Los Altos coach Bernie Quintero hopes his young club can continue to play the way it has in recent weeks.

"We've won eight of our last 10 games," Quintero said," and I hope that gives us some momentum."

A win against Del Mar would set up a noon game with No. 2 Carlmont Saturday at Hawes in Redwood City.

Pinewood, meanwhile, is the No. 12 seed in the Division III playoffs. The Panthers (12-5) meet No. 5 Pacific Grove at 3 p.m. today.

A win would pit Pinewood against No. 4 Pioneer at 2 p.m. Saturday at PAL.
