Block parties key to knowing neighbors

Special to the Town Crier

After such natural disasters as the recent tornado that hit Los Altos, residents often comment, "We don't know what we would have done without our neighbors."

Should an emergency or disaster arise, the benefit of knowing your neighbors cannot be emphasized enough. In an era when Americans are increasingly isolated from one another, community gatherings such as block parties can help to reduce the sense of isolation.

The Year of the Good Neighbor Committee of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills is designating the month of June as the Good Neighbor Month.

The community spirit created by the block party strengthens the small-town atmosphere.

The Year of the Good Neighbor Committee would like to know what type of block party has worked successfully in your neighborhood. Send your story in writing to the Town Crier, and we will share it with readers in forthcoming articles in June.

Upcoming will be tips on how to organize a block party.
