Los Altos residents David Hoa, Lesley Muller, Kiren Sekar and James Whitesell and Los Altos Hills residents Amy Tso and Terri Yu and Mountain View resident Matthew Chun were among the the 7,400 students nationwide to be named National Merit Scholarship winners. Each student received a $2,000 scholarship.

Los Altos residents Catherine Cabot, Jennifer Bean and David Shur performed with the Whitman College Chorale during the school's annual spring concert April 3. Cabot and Bean sang soprano. Shur sang bass.

The following students won first place for their grade at the fourth annual student art contest sponsored by Federated Woman's Club of Los Altos, April 22: First grade, Laura Winkleman of Oak School; second grade, Katie Mueller of Springer, third grade, Zack Wood Dougherty of Oak School; fourth grade, Henry Milner of Springer School; fifth grade, Witney Randall of Almond School; and sixth grade, Florencia Yeh of Bullis School. Each first-place winner was presented with a $50 U.S. Savings Bond from Doe Melrose, student art chairman.

Ryan E. Du Val, a freshman from Los Altos in the School of Music at Northwestern University, has been named to the dean's list for the 1997-'98 winter quarter.

Julia L. Shreve, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William R. Shreve of Los Altos, was recently named a college scholar for the fall term at Middlebury College in Vermont for her high academic achievement.

Seventh graders from Blach Intermediate School won second place recently at the Seventh Annual Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl, where about 118 teams from throughout California participated. Team members include: Kevin Bentz, Tristan Shuman, Nick Honda, Martin Roark, Ryan Feinstein, Eric Milla, Amir Adibi, Beth Goodsel, Kyle Macmillan, Daniel, Weisfield, Geoff Rosenberg, Hannah Cao, Blair Knickerbocker, Estelle Hong and Laurie Russo.

Michael J. Bagley of Los Altos was among the 1,689 students at Oregon State University to earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher during the winter term.

Scott Yewell, son of Nancy and Dave Yewell of Los Altos Hills, graduated from Cornell University May 23 with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. Yewell is a 1994 graduate of Los Altos High. He has been accepted into the Cornell master of engineering program for next fall.

St. Nicholas School students Errin Simko, Evan Ewald and Chris Meyer recently won county wide recognition for their science projects.
