Give priority to revising design guidelines

With the debate over housing designs dominating local news these days, there's a sense of urgency for Los Altos city officials to establish some new guidelines.

We urge city officials to proceed quickly in their review of the city's residential guidelines.

And we urge residents to participate in the process. As it is now, mostly developers, architects and city officials comprise a city task force that will look into revising guidelines.

Tomorrow night at 7:30 at City Hall, the planning commissioners are holding a session of public input for citizens to share their concerns about the current guidelines.

The recent neighbor reactions against second-story additions - a theme played out on Camellia Way in two different homes and most recently regarding a home on Galli drive - suggest how passionate people are about maintaining the consistency of their neighborhood.

But what is a consistent neighborhood? One with houses all alike? All one-story? Or like Camellia Way, which already has a few two-story houses, but is mostly one-story ranch-style housing?

Neighbors are facing off against neighbors as young families move to town and try to adapt their 1950s ranch houses to their 1990s needs.

As resident John Friend asked of the council, don't deny a plan and then send people back to "go guess."

If the citizens and the city work together with dispatch, some answers will be forthcoming soon.

But citizens must speak up now - not wait until they see surveyor stakes next door.
