Through many media, such as storytelling, puppet shows and films, children of all ages had an opportunity to discover good books. Twice-weekly events were offered exclusively for the school-aged children. Park story hours were held weekly at Shoup Park where children of all ages brought lunch and enjoyed good stories. Los Altan Bill Roesky, a De Anza College freshman, set a new meet record of 52.9 seconds while winning the 440-yard intermediate hurdles at the NorCal junior college championships, qualifying him for the state meet. Foothill College's track team had its finest finish since 1965, placing third at the Northern California finals at College of Mann. Santa Rita School boys' track and field team won first place among Los Altos schools competing in the junior Olympics sponsored by the recreation department. Steve Stefanki, a touring tennis professional from Los Altos, was teaching the game in many parts of the world by conducting clinics for youngsters in foreign lands. 50 years ago in the Los Altos News According to the June 3, 1948, edition of the Los Altos News, about 800 spectators watched nearly 900 brightly costumed children in a parade that opened the festivities of the annual "May Play Day" at Los Altos Elementary School. Led by the school band and a bevy of majorettes, the students completely encircled the three acres of school yard. Dana Hopper and Jimmy Trask, tiniest members of the kindergarten class, were crowned queen and king of Play Day. The morning programs consisted of folk dances presented by each of the eight grades. At noon, Parent-Teacher Associates members served some 2,700 hot dogs, 100 cases of soft drinks, 165 dozen ice cream cups, 1,500 cupcakes and tubs and tubs of potato salad. Closing events of the day were softball games, one between boys and fathers and another between mothers and the faculty. Voting in Los Altos on June 1, 1948, was indicative of statewide apathy. Throughout the state, voters who made the trip to the polls were a small portion of eligible voters. Congressional incumbent Jack Z. Anderson again captured the nominations of both Democrats and Republicans in the Eighth Congressional race.
