A new exhibition of still life and floral oil paintings by the late Frank Weymouth opens Thursday with a reception from 5:30-8 p.m. at Sunbird Gallery, 333 First St. Weymouth, who died last February at his Los Altos home, was 87.

The Sunbird exhibition features about 40 pieces of work that span Weymouth's 30-plus years as a Peninsula artist.

Weymouth, a Stanford graduate who majored in business, owned and operated a florist shop in Palo Alto for many years. Upon retiring, he enrolled in a painting class and discovered that he had natural ability and talent for painting. Art opened a whole new world for Weymouth, who embarked on second career as a full-time artist and teacher.

Weymouth, an avid gardener, painted florals and California landscapes in a direct fashion that appeals to ordinary people. His love of nature and his ability to create highly energetic canvases are his lasting legacy.

Truman, who is completing the final stages of the sculpture, and Jay Brandon and Bill Henderson, co-chairmen of the Veterans Memorial Association of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills, said they are excited about the sculpture.
