As reported in the June 13, 1973, issue of the Town Crier, two Awalt High School students, David Martin and Scott Parcel, returned to Los Altos June 9, 1973, from their four-month, 5,000-mile tandem bike trip across the United States. The boys had obtained special permission for the trip from their parents and school authorities after it was classified as an "educational experience."

May 30, 8:25 a.m., 1500 block of Oak Avenue: A caller reported "extensive vandalism" to the playing field at Oak School. Police said the sprinklers were broken off and the field was flooded. Oil-based paint was smeared "all over the bleachers," police said.

Mary Mason, president of the Foothill-De Anza Community College District Board of Trustees, was recently elected president of the Board of Directors of California Community College Trustees. She was elected and sworn in May 17 at the close of the statewide trustees conference in San Diego. Before her election in 1991 to the Foothill board, Mason served for nine years on the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District Board of Trustees.
