Mills College to hold barbecue

Mills College Club members will hold their annual end-of-the-year social event at 6 p.m. June 12 at the Palo Alto home of Jane Bernasconi. The event will feature a salmon barbecue, social hour and election of officers for the '98-'99 school year. For more information, call 323-4066.

De Anza wins 'Best newsletter'

LocalTalk, De Anza College's employee publication, was recently named the best community college internal newsletter in the state for the second year in a row. Its 1997-98 college catalog, "Celebrating Excellence in Education!," was awarded second place.

Upcoming reunions for local schools

The following high school reunions are scheduled: Homestead class of '68 will meet Oct. 3 at the Hyatt St. Claire in San Jose; Fremont class of '78 will meet Aug. 8 at the Doubletree in San Jose; Los Altos class of '78 will meet Sept. 20 at Coconut Grove in Santa Cruz; Awalt classes of '72 and '73 will meet Aug. 15 at Marriott's in Santa Clara; and Awalt class of '78 will meet Sept. 26 at the Sheraton in Palo Alto.

Students make boxes for Red Cross

Students from Santa Rita Elementary School provided 500 friendship boxes to the Palo Alto Area American Red Cross recently to be distributed to less fortunate children in Peru. The boxes included pens, pencils, erasers, notepads, shampoo, toothpaste and toothbrushes.

Red Cross societies throughout the country send friendship boxes to needy children. The boxes serve as personal care kits for children affected by disasters. For more information, call 688-0415.

Mountain View mayor meets with Clinton

Mountain View mayor Ralph Faravelli met with President Bill Clinton last month, along with 40 other mayors, to present an action plan for the nation's public schools. Issues discussed included school construction, class size reduction and urban education opportunity zones.

The meeting was part of the U.S. Conference of Mayors Public Schools Conference, focusing on the mayor's role in improving public education.
