Members of the Mountain View-Los Altos Adult School recently named Esther Eisenberg "Adult Learner of the Year 1998," an honor awarded to adult students 55 years or over who are attending adult classes through the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District program.

Since retiring from social work in 1982, Eisenberg has been enrolled in adult classes including music, art, literature, physical fitness, Jewish studies and painting.

She most recently studied drama, which included playing the role of the narrator in "Season of the Heart" at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts.

Eisenberg grew up in Brooklyn, where she attended Brooklyn College in 1938. Following her desire for freedom, opportunity and adventure, she traveled west, settling in California in 1944. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees in social work from the University of California at Berkeley. She also met her husband there.

As a social worker, Eisenberg worked with school-age mothers to keep them in school.

Eisenberg, who describes herself as a life-long learner, said school "keeps me alive. I can meet people."
