View) High School seniors in graduation ceremonies on June 13, 1973, on Anderson field at the school. Superintendent Daniel Predovich of the Mountain View-Los Altos High School District presented the class. Diplomas were distributed by trustees Delia Ybarra and Dr. Kirn. Los Altos High School's 444 graduating seniors received their diplomas in ceremonies held the evening of June 14, 1973, on the school's football field. Diplomas were presented by District Superintendent Daniel Predovich and Trustee Mary Wheat. The year's theme of the grad night party in the school quad was "A Knight Around the World." The Los Altos High girls track team captured the league championship at Lynbrook High in San Jose in June 1973. It was the second year the team had been champions as well as its second year of existence. The following year looked to be another outstanding season since only two members of the winning team graduated in 1973 and some fine runners were expected from Egan and Covington. St. Simon completed its 1972-73 athletic program with its annual sports awards day. John Konevich and Kay Melarcan were named "Athletes of the Year." It was the first year that a girl had been selected for the top award. 50 years ago in the Los Altos News According to the June 17, 1948, issue of the Los Altos News, things were rolling right along in plans for the Los Altos Theater, according to J.M. Stephens, vice president and general manager of the theater company. New plans had been blue printed and specifications were out for bids. Original plans had been discarded and the redesigned ones called for an all- concrete structure. The playgrounds of the Los Altos Grammar School were flooded with an avalanche of children on Monday morning, June 14, 1948, when the local summer recreation program got under way. Two hundred twenty youngsters were registered for the craft and rhythm classes and a story hour was set up for the very youngest children. The best bottle collector in town in June 1948 was Tom Parks of Scout Troop 35. He had captured the individual high score in the Boy Scout bottle-collecting contest. Points were awarded in proportion to the turn-in value of the bottles and the overall bottle collection total amounted to 6,362. - Ellen Shaw of the Los Altos History House Association |
