High jumper Darren Marble described last Saturday's Golden West Invitational track and field meet as "a learning experience."

And what did he learn?

"I need to train harder," said Marble, who won the state championship June 6. "I need to do more weight training and running."

The recent Los Altos High grad faced some of the best prep high jumpers in the country at Golden West, held at American River College in Sacramento.

Ranked seventh coming into the meet, Marble turned some heads by tying for fourth place with a jump of 6 feet 8 inches.

But Marble knows he will need to go higher than that to place at the national meet June 26-27 in Edwardsville, Illinois. Most of the participants will have at least cleared 7 feet - a mark Marble aspires to make.

"I'm still looking for that seven," said Marble, who's best jump is 6-10 1/4. "I feel I'm getting closer - I just need to keep working at it."

Marble plans to do a lot of work in the two weeks leading up to the national meet. His schedule includes weight lifting, sprinting and, of course, lots of jumping under the watchful eye of coach Fred Graber.
