"There's a thirst for spirituality." Those are some of the themes addressed in your fine article 'Going Beyond Success' (Town Crier, April 29). It is gratifying that an ever-increasing number of people are looking to spiritual ideas for healing. However, it is puzzling there was no mention of the Christian Science Church. There have been thousands upon thousands of carefully documented cases of healing by Christian Scientists for over 100 years, with many cases of healing having taken place right here in Los Altos. These include not only problems of stress, financial and human relations, but also healings of every manner of physical ailments. The teachings of Christian Science are based on the Bible and especially on the teachings of Christ Jesus. If our wonderful neighbors in Los Altos want to find out more about spiritual healing. Our Reading Room at 60 Main St. is always open to the public and we always welcome visitors to our church services on Sundays and Wednesdays. Christiane CreightonLos Altos Fond memories at Al's barbershop Al's Barber Shop on Main Street in Los Altos is celebrating its 50th anniversary this spring and I'd like to give a cheer for the 1,260 times Al has cut my hair. I have a stiff, strong-willed head of hair and Al makes it so neat that occasionally someone will ask, "What do you say to the barber to get a haircut like that?" I tell them, I just say, "Hi, Al." I have never told Al how to cut my hair. I just climb into the chair when he says, "Next." On special occasions, I'd say, "I'd like a Rembrandt." There are times when I must get a haircut out-of-town and then Al always has to straighten it out when I return. The constant banter between Al and Louis is a bonus benefit, part of the act. My daughters, who are now grown and no longer live in California, remember when they were little girls, sitting in Al's shop for my Saturday haircut. It's part of their fond memories of this great place, Los Altos. Happy golden anniversary, Al and Louis. May the Lord bless you guys! Ashley ChapmanLos Altos Doesn't dictate others' lifestyle choices EDITOR'S NOTE: The following is a portion of an open letter addressed to the Los Altos Homeowners League. A copy was given to the Town Crier. I do not agree with the shrill hyperbole in characterizations of new houses as being "greed-driven monstrosities" and the like. If people can afford to pay the absurd prices that lots in Los Altos are selling for, and on top of that can afford to build a large house, and if that is how those people want to spend their money and how they want to live, I do not believe it is for me or for you to obstruct them. One of the rewards of success is being able to do things you otherwise could not, and someone else's "greed-driven monstrosity" does not diminish my life or my enjoyment of things. I am happy for those people who choose to live in large houses and can afford to build them. It is not my choice, but I don't spend my life trying to dictate other peoples' lifestyle choices. If you need a target for your resentment, it would be better directed at the claptrap high density housing being thrown up by "greed-driven" developers with no apparent social conscience. Peter N.
