Bastille Day party set for July 12 The Palo Alto-based Albi Committee of Neighbors Abroad is planning a Bastille Day celebration, from 7-11 p.m. July 12, at the Cubberley Community Center, 4000 Middlefield Road, in Palo Alto. This is the fifth year that this local Francophile group will be celebrating the storming of the Bastille, a state prison in Paris that was destroyed on July 14, 1789, during the French Revolution. Lee Cullinan, a Los Altos resident and co-chairwoman of the party, said the event last year drew 460 people including the French consul-General. Cullinan reports that visitors consider the event is "authentic," with pate, cheese, baguettes, sketch artists and dancing. For more information, call Cullinan at 948-3338. Host families for French students Civi-Ling, a nonprofit organization that offers French youth a chance to discover English culture, is looking for Los Altos host families to house exchange students. Over the past 12 years, families from different countries in Europe, the East Coast and, as of last year, California have provided accommodations. Students are usually between 16 and 21 years old. The group will welcome the students from Aug. 7-27. For more information, call 969-6909. Hidden Villa open July 4-5 Hidden Villa, which is closed to the public through Aug. 22 while its summer camp program is in session, will be open this weekend on Saturday and Sunday. The wilderness preserve, located on Moody Road in Los Altos Hills, will offer farm tours, hiking trails and other activities during this and its other open weekends this summer. Other open weekends include July 18-19, July 26 and Aug. 8-9. There will be an outdoor family concert Aug. 23. For more information, call 949-8653. Utility tax exemptions for seniors If you are a senior citizen living in Los Altos, you may be eligible for an exemption from the utility user taxes found on your gas, electric, telephone, cable television and water bills. Basic requirements are that you must be 65 or over, reside in a households where the gross annual income of all residents does not exceed $27,200 annually and not be otherwise reimbursed from the utility charges upon which the tax is based. EurAupair program seeks host families Local families with children ages 3 months to 12 years interested in hosting an au pair exchange participant from Europe, Japan, South Africa or French-speaking Canada are being sought by the non-profit EurAupair Intercultural Child Care Program.
