Some who decry disbanding the National Endowment for the Arts cite concerns over where the next generation of artists will come from. Regardless of whether the federal funding stays or goes, it's obvious that the next generation of artists is alive and well.

Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and Mountain View residents had first-hand proof of this after viewing winners in the seventh annual "Young At Art" competition, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Los Altos.

Directors from five galleries in Los Altos judged some 25 entries, choosing 10 winners, two from each of five local high schools: Los Altos, Mountain View, Alta Vista, Pinewood and St. Francis.

"The art was really nice this year - from computer generated art to photography, pencil and acrylic," said Carole Richbourg, who coordinated this year's competition.

First-place winners received $120 checks, and had their works displayed through the month of June at Gleim's Jewelers, Le Boulanger and two branches of the Bank of Los Altos. The works also were displayed at the Rotary "Fine Art in the Park" show May 16 and 17 at Lincoln Park. Second-place winners received $80 and also had works displayed.

This year's first place winners are: Alice Hsiaw, Los Altos High; Jennifer Nado, Mountain View High; Allison Novak, Alta Vista High; Katherine Nieh, Pinewood School; and Chris Allen, St. Francis High.
