The money was raised during the 1997-98 school year to help fund the tutorial centers, college and career centers, and purchase science and technology supplies and equipment as well as replace obsolete textbooks at both Los Altos and Mountain View high schools. "Our students benefit directly from this generous contribution," Fischer said. Since its founding in 1982, the Foundation has raised money each year to support and enhance programs in the district that would not have been possible otherwise. Next year the Foundation has set a goal of $152,000, which will bring the total donated to the district over the past 15 years to $1,000,000. In addition to continued support of the tutorial centers and college and career centers, funds are earmarked for upgrading classrooms with computer technology. The district is well known for its strong academic program. Students in the district exceed the state and national averages on the Scholastic Aptitude Test and achievement tests. The graduate rate is 99 percent with 85 percent of the students continuing on to college. In addition, both schools offer excellent sports programs and boast fine music and arts departments, said Foundation president Paul Baker.
