"The election puts the responsibility where it belongs - on the public - to decide who the board members are," said trustee Judith Moss. The election will be held as part of the Nov. 3 general election. John Shupe, attorney for the district, advised the trustees that a special election would cost the district more than $200,000. Having the election as part of the general election will cost $45,000. Mary Mason, board president, said she received about 20 calls from the community asking the board to make an appointment. The final vote was 4 to 1 with Jackman voting no, preferring an appointment. "With an appointment, the process would include affirmative action, which an election will not," Jackman said. Jackman resigned from his post, effective July 23, to relocate to Ithaca, N.Y., where his wife, a former Stanford professor, has accepted a position with a foundation. Jackman was elected to his second four-year term on the board last November. Candidates must file papers with the registrar of voters between July 13 and Aug. 7. Candidate packets may be obtained at the Foothill-De Anza Community College District Chancellor's Office, 12345 El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills, 94022. Candidate papers are also available from the county registrar of voters, 1555 Berger Drive in San Jose. Trustee elections are at-large in the Foothill-De Anza Community College District, which includes Cupertino, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, and parts of San Jose. |
