PG&E delivering preventative service
Pacific Gas and Electric Company is applying the latest technology to deliver reliable and continuous service to its 4.5 million electric customers. Since early spring PG&E has been on the roadways in specially equipped vans to pinpoint potential electrical problems before outages can occur.
Inside each of the 27 PG&E vans, an equipment operator scans overhead power lines and equipment with an infrared camera while the driver travels along at normal speeds. If the image on the screen shows an abnormal temperature differential, or "hot spot" the location is further studied to evaluate the need for repair or replacement.
