On The Arts

The visual arts have had fantastic visibility in our community this summer with an abundance of activities. A brief recap includes the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce and the Village Association's first successful art and antique walk on June 25. The art momentum continued into July with the July 4 Shoup Park dedication for the Veterans memorial monument, "Cradle of Liberty," created by Los Altos artist R. J. Truman. The ever popular 19th annual Los Altos Arts and Wine Festival followed.

As July closes, the second of three scheduled art walks takes place Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. This second "walking tour" is actually an art evening. It includes most of the shops from the June walk, each clearly identified with yellow balloons, and listed on a free map available from the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce. The listing includes information about the participating shops, activities, exhibitions and a bonus raffle that includes a framed work of art.

The participating businesses in this art and antique event will highlight their diversity and many unique specialty items. In total, there are 10 shops participating, three antique shops and seven galleries. Casa de Belle Cose, 145 First St., will feature home furnishings and artifacts from around the world. Patricia Knight from Patrician Antiques, 197 First St., will discuss silver hallmarks. One of a Kind, 390 State St., a consignment shop, offers a variety of objects and accessories for the home.

The galleries are showing off their artists, art and specialized services. Fast Frame, 371 State St. will demonstrate preservation framing techniques for antiques. Viewpoints Gallery, 315 State St., will present artist Debbie Kunic demonstrating her miniature animal process. William Marcus, 378 Main St., will present a handmade paper demonstration. Sunbird Gallery, 333 First St., will host oil painting demonstrations by Joseph Fuchs, painter of the "Masked Venetian World of Pucinella."

Two galleries will offer etching demonstrations. Gallery Michael, 164 Main St., presents Hungarian-born Peter Garbera, who will demonstrate the copper plate etching process. Gallery 9, 143 Main St., will offer an etching demonstration presented by Elaine Rothwell. Charles Halleck will give a Polaroid transfer demonstration and Carol Hake will sketch from the audience.

ZYT Galerie, 923 N. San Antonio Road, will present a new exhibition of master botanical paintings, prints, and drawing by Manabu Saito. ZYT Galerie will have a drawing for two prizes - a framed Saito print, and a copy of Saito's wildflower book.
