The city of Los Altos is in the process of sending the station owners a letter, "asking them to comply with shutting down," said Larry Tong, Los Altos Planning Director. The station, that has been in business for 32 years, has been operating with a non-conforming use permit that expired four years ago. At a June 9 meeting, the city council declined to extend the permit and gave the station 30 days to close. The city had not received a formal request from the station owners as of July 15, Tong said. "But one possibility would be to consider a re-zoning and general plan amendment that would allow for single family residential development on that corner." Rick Hirsch, the agent for the station owner, said "the situation is still being worked on, and I'm unable to comment." San Antonio Road to be resurfaced At its July 14 meeting, the Los Altos City Council approved a contract for resurfacing San Antonio Road. Work for this $399,000 project is scheduled to be complete by Aug. 25, said Bruce Bane, director of public works for Los Altos. The project includes overlaying/resurfacing all of San Antonio Road between Foothill Expressway and El Camino Real, and will include pavement repairs and adjustment to grade of manholes and water valves, including striping, Bane said. Overlay work at the ends of the road will be done on weekends, Bane said, due to the high volume of traffic. Middle sections will be done on week days, Bane said. There could be times of "significant congestion" during the project, Bane said. The resurfacing project was awarded to the low bidder, G. Bortolotto & Company. Work should start early in August, Bane said. - Joanne Griffith Domingue |
