Design guideline task force meets today for first time

The task force that will be reviewing the residential guidelines for the city of Los Altos holds its first meeting today.

After months of public input to identify the issues and council wrangling over who should be on the task force, the group will gather from 5:30-7 p.m. in Room A at Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos.

Two of the most pressing issues, based upon citizen concerns that have surfaced at council and planning commission meetings in the past months, are what two-story additions should look like and what makes a consistent neighborhood.

The task force members include: planning commissioners Curtis Cole, Chet Frankenfield, Penny Lave, Bruce Skov and Linn Winterbotham; historical commissioners Steve Aced and Mark Sandoval; architects Phoebe Bressack and Walter Chapman; council members Mayor Kris Casto and Lou Becker; and members of the public, Henry Brook, Steve Gilliland, Jane Reed and Cindy Sidaris.

The lead city staff member will be David Kornfield, assistant city planner.

The task force should complete its work by mid-October, said Larry Tong, planning director.

The goal is for the task force to have six meetings, Casto said. The council is working to be "responsive," Casto said, to citizen concerns about residential design issues.

The meetings are open to the public but are not public hearings, Tong said.
