Town Crier Staff Report

Andrew Fraknoi, astronomy instructor at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, was recently appointed to serve a three-year term on the Educational Board of the American Astronomical Society - the main professional body of astronomers in the United States. He is the only community college representative to serve on the board.

Fraknoi will be charged with making recommendations about national astronomy education policy and overseeing the astronomical society's education programs. Fraknoi will be joined on the national board by colleagues representing institutions such as Princeton, Amherst, and the Space Telescope Science Institute.

A San Francisco resident, Fraknoi began teaching at Foothill College in 1992. In addition to teaching thousands of Silicon Valley residents about the cosmos, Fraknoi is chairman of the Foothill Astronomy Department and serves as weekend astronomy correspondent for National Public Radio. He holds a bachelor's degree from Harvard University and a master's degree from UC Berkeley.
