Town Crier Staff Report

The Charlie Wedemeyer All-Star Football Game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. tonight at San Jose State's Spartan Stadium.

Named after the former Los Gatos High football coach who's been battling Lou Gehrig's Disease since 1977, the game will feature many of the county's top high school standouts.

Approximately 100 players from the class of 1998 are expected to participate in the 24th annual charity game, which pits North against South.

Eight players from local high schools will be playing for the North team.

They are defensive back Ryan Gutierrez of Los Altos, fullback Mike Caldwell of Mountain View, kicker Bryan Beall and offensive lineman Joe Escobar of St. Francis, defensive back Fred Shepherd and tight end Brent Bower of Gunn and defensive lineman Matt Kenney and linebacker Chris Brooker of Homestead.

A more detailed preview of the game appeared in last week's Town Crier.

Tickets to tonight's contest are $8 (kids under 5 get in free) and can be purchased in advance by calling the San Jose Box Office at (408) 246-1160.
