One half of the cash award was allocated to the school to advance the use of technology.Lev Landa Mei Phing Lei, Ying Ching Wong, Eddie Lee Wilmin Martono, Ketty Tanizar and Andrew Demas of Foothill College in Los Altos Hills recently placed 7th in the nation for their team score in the National Mathematics Competition sponsored by the American Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges. More than 140 two-year colleges were represented in the competition. Lev and Landa also scored the 7th highest individual score nationally in the same competition. Tripp Rea, son of Sue Rea of Los Altos and Woody Rea of Los Altos Hills, is a recipient of the Dean's Award for academic excellence during the spring semester at Colgate University. Marcus Chung, a graduate of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn., recently received the Mann Prize and the Roger Maynard Award at a ceremony honoring student achievement for outstanding achievements in the Romance Languages and his athletic spirit. He is a '94 graduate of Los Altos High School and the son of Belinda and Kenneth Cung of Los Altos. Deanna Tryon, a 1989 graduate of Los Altos High School, received her master's degree in government with an emphasis in international relations and Mexican government from Harvard University. Tryon earned her bachelor's degree in government from the University of San Francisco and then worked as an actress in film and television in Hollywood. She also worked at the British Consulate-General in Los Angeles. Her mother Barbara Tryon is a former Los Altos Hills mayor. Sarah Ireland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Ireland of Exeter, New Hampshire, was among the 334 students to graduate from Phillips Exeter Academy June 7. She was designated a Commended Student in the 1998 National Merit Scholarship Program. Ireland was a 6-year Los Altos resident and attended Pinewood School. Mark Whiteley, a graduate of Los Altos High School and a current senior at the University of California at Santa Cruz, is a 1998 recipient of the William Hyde and Susan Benteen Irwin Scholarship Award. The award is presented to students selected by the UC Santa Cruz Art Department faculty based on outstanding work and promise in the visual arts. Whiteley is an art major with an emphasis in photography. His work will be displayed as part of the Irwin Scholars Exhibit at the University's main gallery. Wayne Tow, a student at St. Francis High School in Mountain View, was among the eight future innovators to receive special recognition at The Tech Museum of Innovation's 8th Annual Volunteer Recognition Event last May. Flutists Kimberly Kwei, a student at Los Altos High School, was recently selected to perform at the Music Teachers' Association of California State convention July 5. Only students who perform exceptionally in the Certificate of Merit Evaluations are chosen to perform in the state level concert. Kwei completed Level III of the evaluation. Kristen Anne Kancler of Los Altos Hills, Kelly Suzanne Appleby of Los Altos and Paul Timothy Cronin and Diana Valer'Yevna Polulyakh, both of Mountain View, were named to the dean's honor list at the University of California at Santa Barbara for the winter quarter. Students named to the list must have a grade point average of 3.75 or higher. Alexandria A. Marcus and Erika J. Vexler were among the students to graduate from Wesleyan University last May. Marcus, daughter of George and Judith Marcus of Los Altos Hills, majored in history. Vexler, daughter of Kinsey and Linda Haffner of Los Altos, majored in government. Matthew McNeil Klinke of Los Altos received a bachelor's degree in economics last June from Oregon State University. Los Altos residents Mick Daniel O'Keefe, Johen Gregory Oney, Joanna Caroline Martha Scripps and Bryan Jon Stevens and Mountain View resident N. Monique Dail were recently named to the dean's list at the University of Oregon for maintaining grade point averages of 3.75 or higher. Tanya Angel Gulesserian, daughter of Ike Gulesserian of Los Altos, received her law degree, specializing in environmental law, on May 16 from Vermont Law School. A graduate of Pinewood High School, she received her bachelor's degree in environmental studies from the University of California at Santa Barbara. She will be taking the California bar exam this summer and has plans to return to the west coast. Gitanjali Jain, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Lall Jain of Los Altos, recently completed a double concentration in business economics and organizational behavior and management. Jain received a bachelor's degree from Brown University. Bethany Anne Davidowski, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Davidowski of Los Altos, recently received a bachelor's degree in psychology from Brown University. Francis Wing-Kai Chan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Chan of Los Altos, recently graduated from Brown University. He completed a concentration in biology and earned special academic honors. Adrienne Bernknopf of Los Altos graduated from the University of Delaware last May. |
