Special to the Town Crier "When you give a little, it means a lot," is a slogan the American Cancer Society uses for its Discovery Shops. Those donations allow the society to fund research, provide education and press on in the fight against cancer. The Los Altos Discovery Shop, at 243 Main St., is celebrating its three years in operation with a silent auction, set to begin 4 p.m., Saturday. Volunteers have made numerous baskets that contain a variety of merchandise. Local businesses have donated services and items to be included in the silent auction. Discovery Shop Manager Ardy Bazarian said tickets to the musical "Chicago" and dinners from different restaurants, including Prima Strada, will be among the items up for bidding. Customers will have an opportunity to view the items, beginning 4 p.m. Saturday. The last bid will be accepted at 4 p.m., Aug. 15, when the awards will be made. "The community as a whole has been very supportive in the year and a half that I have been manager, and this is our opportunity to thank them," Bazarian said. "We have a staff of 75 non-paid volunteer workers who operate the shop from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday." More volunteers are needed. For more information, call 949-0505. |
