September is often thought of as a transition month - neither summer nor autumn.

But for high school students, it's actually a time of great expectations. It's a time when teens want to make that sizzling first impression at school.

Finding that right look should be easy, considering the vast variety of fashions in stores this season.

Unlike previous years, this season's fashions seem to represent the diversity of interests of today's teens.

According to many teens, jeans have made a resurgence in the past few years. By far, the most popular brand this year is Tommy Hilfiger. It conveys a dual feeling of both youth and elegance.

"Everyone is suddenly wearing Tommy jeans. There is something special about them, whether its the tag, the brand, the idea, I don't really know," said Allison Jones, an upcoming junior at Homestead High School.

Other notable jeans include Calvin Klein, which fit on the natural waist and are cut about an inch higher than other jeans; Union Bay Stovepipes, which are designed for skateboarders and snowboarders; and Bongos, which feature a narrow leg.

But whatever the brand, Jones believes that they also should look stone-washed with blotches of white streaks.

Of course, you'll need some basics, too. The most reliable item of basic clothing is the T-shirt, a prime example of California's seasonless dressing.

Styles ranging from Express, No Fear, and Nike to Banana Republic, Gap, and Espirit have won a hands up from many teens. The Tee is the zenith of easy, casual moving, suitable for wear anytime, anywhere.

"I wear all kinds of T-shirts, as long as the collar is solid and not stretchy," said Eric Garcia, an upcoming sophomore at Los Altos High School.

When it comes to footwear, think variety: Doc Marten, chunky heels, sporty Converse and Nikes.

"Contrary to popular belief, shoes are one of the most important parts of anyone's outfit," said Erin Mills, an upcoming senior at St. Francis.

Perhaps, nothing can make as big an impact as your hair.

For girls, the compact Drew Barrymore and stylish Jennifer Aniston looks draw thumbs up from most teens I interviewed.

With an the current array of hair products and shampoos, teens can tailor their hair accordingly. There's that instant frizz-stuff, and rock-hard styling gel.

For the guys, the Brad Pitt, Val Kilmer, and George Clooney looks have become popular.

"ER definitely has it going. Everyone is trying to copy George Clooney in some way," said Ryan Zemlin, upcoming senior at Homestead.
