In sports, success is usually measured by wins and losses. But success can also be determined by awards. Just ask the Los Altos Flying Tigers.

The local adult football team only went 5-4 this season and placed third in the United States Amateur Football Federation. Yet at the USAFF's year-end meeting last month, the coaches selected 15 Flying Tigers to the all-league team. Eight Flying Tigers were named to the first unit and seven made the second tier.

Making the first team were fullback Rick Davey, linebacker Darren Jones, kicker Dave King, offensive tackle Mike Marchan, defensive end Hugo Roverso, wide receiver Yusef Smith (a Mountain View High graduate), defensive tackle Keven Woods and defensive back Andre Zelms.

In addition, Davey was named Offensive Player of the Year, King was Special Teams Player of the Year and Woods shared Co-Defensive Player of the Year honors with Mike Neely of the San Jose Wildcats.

Flying Tigers voted to the second team include offensive guard Junior Afoa, tailback Berry Chester, linebacker Joe Hensley, strong safety Noel Lopez, offensive tackle Carl Stevens, defensive back Jamie Vincent and quarterback Corneal Washington.

James Clarke, Flying Tigers general manager, said he is already focusing on next season. Clarke has scheduled two exhibition games in October with the Fresno Bandits, three-time champions of the American Football Association.
