A favorite at the San Francisco Landscape Show each year, Parer has been featured in Martha Stewart Living and Sunset magazines. Parer will speak on scented and hardy geraniums. The program is set to begin 1:30 p.m. in the Creekside Room of the United Methodist Church, 655 Magdalena Ave., Los Altos. The public is invited. Admission is $5. Education Center campaign kickoff The Campaign for the Education Center at Los Altos History House officially kicks off its public campaign Aug. 30 to raise money for a $1.65 million building to house city archives and other historical resources. The event, running 3-6 p.m., is at the home of Bob and Susan Wayman, former site of the Adobe Creek Lodge and Country Club, in Los Altos Hills. For reservations or more information, call 948-7436. Los Altos Art Docents The Los Altos Arts Docents are currently recruiting new volunteers to assist in bringing art into Los Altos School District classrooms. Those interested will spend the next five months training in several hands-on and art appreciation units. These units are a sampling of the more than 40 classes in watercolor, clay, brush painting, graphic design, print making and art appreciation that docents teach in kindergarten through eighth grade. CSA needs volunteers for bike repairs Community Services Agency of Mountain View, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills is seeking volunteers for its bicycle repair program. Bikes are repaired and distributed to low-income families for the holiday season. IMAGE meeting features film composer Film composer Miriam Cutler will be the featured speaker at the next meeting of IMAGE, set for 7:30 p.m., Aug. 27, in Room H-1 of Cubberley Community Center, 4000 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto. Cutler has scored and underscored dozens of feature and independent films, including documentaries, TV shows and cartoons. One of her most recent documentary works, "Licensed to Kill," aired in later June on the PBS series, POV. IMAGE is a nonprofit organization that serves as a forum for Bay Area filmmakers, videographers and animators to learn from professionals on a variety of topics and how to market films. Classes for aspiring leaders Leadership Education Advancement, or LEAD, a community involvement education course sponsored by the Los Altos Community Foundation, is seeking participants for a monthly course aimed at young professionals interested in taking on a leadership role. Classes start in September at various locations in Los Altos and will be held once a month for eight months. This is the fourth year for the course. The performances range from marches to popular musicals. The band, conducted by Eldon Wiegman, is sponsored by the Los Altos Sertoma, Kiwanis and Rotary clubs. The Palo Alto-based opera company's 43rd season will kick off with Gioachino Rossini's opera, "The Italian Girl in Algers," a comedy sung in English. Music For Minors call for docents Volunteers are needed to enrich music programs in local elementary schools. Visit a class weekly as a Music for Minors docent. Songs, games, rhythm instruments, music appreciation and movement activities will be included. Volunteers don't need to be trained musicians. If you are a senior citizen living in Los Altos, you may be eligible for an exemption from the utility user taxes found on your gas, electric, telephone, cable television and water bills. Basic requirements are that you must be 65 or over, reside in a households where the gross annual income of all residents does not exceed $27,200 annually and not be otherwise reimbursed from the utility charges upon which the tax is based.
